About The Role

Islington – For a More Equal Future

Islington is amazing – 5.7sqm packed full of vibrant communities and culture backed by a rich history of challenging norms and inspiring progress. It’s a place that’s always changing and full of new opportunities – but the advantages of our borough aren’t always shared with everyone who lives and works here.

Changing this is hard work. We’re on a mission to work together to make Islington a more equal place, but we know this is becoming even harder in a world where costs are rising, our funding is reducing and many of the challenges our residents face are out of our direct control.

However, our ambition for our residents remains because we believe a more equal Islington is better for all of us.

And that’s why we need you – an outstanding leader who can help change our council so that we can better deliver our purpose and deliver change for our communities. You will work to the Chief Executive and over the next 12 months, help shape the future direction of the council, lead change and help us to focus on where we can make the most impact.

You’ll be a strategic thinker who understands and is passionate about public sector reform, with a track record of delivering impactful strategy, partnership and organisational change programmes – alongside excellent communications and stakeholder engagement skills. You can prove that you aren’t weighed down by dogma, and will innovate, adapt and empower colleagues to drive change.

Working for the team, service and our organisation

Islington is a place rich with diversity and culture. As a council our sense of purpose couldn’t be clearer: we serve. It’s in the logo. We are committed to challenging inequality in the borough and as one of the largest employers we know that to look after the place and the planet, we have to look after our people. Together we can change the future.

We are determined to create a more equal Islington, where everyone who lives here has an equal chance to thrive.

To do this, everyone who works at Islington Council lives by a set of values which guide us in everything that we do: collaborative, ambitious, resourceful, and empowering. They spell out ‘CARE’, which is what we think public service is all about.
